Threesday 3: Sample this!

Back once again it's the renegade master, default damager, with the ill behaviour. But this time I brought you three tracks which have been re-sampled or re-cut to form new digital masterpieces. We all know that the way to Amarillo is just off junction 7 of the M25, but the road from Jazz to Techno is not quite as far... Track 1 Artist: Herbie Hancock Title: Bring Down the Birds Download here A little ditty from "The Rocket" Herbie Hancock that gifts the baseline to a classic dee-lite-full early 90s dance track. Track 2 Artist: Buddy Rich Title: The Beat Goes On Download here Buddy Rich, a Jazz Drummer biffs out his version of this track by Sonny and Cher and it is given a techno re-working in the early 90s. Shame, but the beat does go on a little too long on this.... Track 3 Artist: Bobby Dorough Title: Three is a Magic Number Download here It takes three legs to make a tripod or to make a table stand, And it takes three wheels to make a vehicle called a tricycle And every triangle has three corners, Every triangle has three sides, No more, no less, You don’t have to guess That it’s three Can’t you see? It’s a magic number Download links via SendMeFile are valid until 09/08/05 - enjoy

Bi-Polar

Well here it is, or rather, here's the tracklisting. You can mail me an address to post it to - or exchange a pint of foaming ale for a CD. They're sat next to me all burnt and everything. They're off a spindle of cheap CD's (I'm unemployed dammit!) - so no case I'm afraid, but you've got one lying around haven't you? Course you do, it's over there in that pile. To make it look super wizzy fire up the old printer... You can download the CD artwork here cover and here back. Don't forget to make the files CMYK before you print them out to get the best results. Straight Out Of Compton 1:49 Nina Gordon Now I'm a chap who likes a cover version - but It's got to bring something new to the table, and I think this does. If you like the sound of a posh, pretty bird with a filthy mouth look no further. Baby Love Child 3:32 Pizzicato Five Quite simply my fave Pizzicato Five track, and I can't believe Mr Askey didn't beat me to it Music Clubbing this tune. If you're a fan of winsome, melodic beats in the LemonJelly mould (no pun intended) then I recommend you check them out. Hey hey 16K 2:50 MJ Hibbert Geekariffic! Low, low production values, but great songwriting shines through. Lyrics that will probably bring a tear to the throat and a lump to the eye of most Music-Club members as they regale junior colleagues with war stories of the early days of computing... 'of course back then we didn't have zeroes for binary, we had to use the letter O' RIGBY REGGAE 3:19 Loo & Placido To be honest I could have filled an entire CD with Bootleg mash-ups, but there's only so many times you can listen to the oh-so original combination of Eminem, Missy and the Strokes, add a dash of Aguleira acapella for real stand-out. That said Messrs Loo & Placido make a superior mash-up thats a little bit different. And it makes you think Programming is a poetry for our time 2:18 MJ Hibbert More geekery from Mr Hibbert, trust me it's a grower Original Cold Scrubs 3:52 Braces Tower The second bootleg offering - a little more mainstream but a great example. I suspect that a lot of the popularity of the bootleg scene is entirely due to the fact that it makes it okay for Nathan Barley type wankers like me to listen to great pop like S-Club 7 and Britney in an 'oh so post modern way' The symbol our nation 3:48 MJ Hibbert Final track from the lo-fi troubadour, not only is he a geek, but a Pub enthusiast! Again great songwriting overcoming the pound-shop recording quality. And the Backing Vox give it a rather garage-gospel feel that puts me in mind of The Housemartins - praise indeed. Build 4:48 The Housemartins Speaking of which... This is on here 'cos it always makes me think of Milton Keynes, and that always makes me think of you guys, and then I... excuse me I have something in my eye. The Rooster 3:57 Big Boi Speakerboxxx Is it Hip-Hop? Soul? R&B? I dunno either, but it was one of the finest albums of the year that's for darn sure! Typically contrary I prefer Big Boi's half. Dr. Baker 4:08 The Beta Band Psychadelic techno Folk beards The Beta Band, with a sonambulent summer groove to get you nodding away, whether it's in the car or on the sofa with a bottle of the old Vino Collapso. Dog Got A Bone 5:58 The Beta Band Ditto Lay Lady Lay 4:37 Magnet (With Gemma Hayes) The Scandinavian countries punch above their weight musically, quality and quantity that puts their feckless south european cousins to shame. Some put the quality of Northern Europe's music down to a more dour outlook, combined with a massive enthusiasm for binge drinking, both of which are sadly lacking on the Med. Anyhoo Norway's Magnet prove once more that old Mr Zimmerman writes a great song, and other people perform them better than he does. Jimi, Byrds, Stones etc etc. Alone Again Or 3:17 Love It's a classic hippy mariachi stomper. AudioTrack 18 0:28 Cassette Boy Christmas classic, fiddled with by Cassette Boy. Imagine an unemployed stoner with cassette decks a great sense of humour and a big bag of weed. I think you hear me knocking, I think I'm coming in. Reign (Ft. Ian Brown And Mani) 5:42 Unkle Never Never Land (Promo) If you don't know about the UNKLE project then you my friend are in for a treat. Banish thoughts of Mr Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo, and direct your mind to a beautiful fusion of dance beats and musicians playing 'proper' instruments. It's a dangerous thing to say, especially in Manchester where the Stone Roses hold a mythical significance, but I really think Ian Brown is currently producing his best work. Oooh controversial. Rez 9:57 Underworld Let's up the pace, the final sprint to the chequered flag is upon us. For a LOT of folk I know this tune brings a wry smile to the face and dare I say a little lump to the throat. When we'd throw an all nighter the DJ would make sure and drop this when he knew everybody was at the optimum point of chemical imbalance, can you feel the rushes? I'm fuckin' peaking man! Joliver 1:36 Cassette Boy

Well, the insurance company assure me they'll soon be writing a cheque to replace the stolen CD burner - hey we were burgled in February, swift service, so I couldn't wait any longer I just went out and bought a new one. Dammit they're cheap now! I also predict it'll be impossible to buy one in a years time, it'll all be DVDs you mark my words. Now then, are we going to meet up for a pint or will you people want these fellas posting out to youse? Once I know the consensus I'll post the track listing

Threesday 2 - The Early Years

A late Threesday today folks - sorry. Again, in the absence of any proper webspace, I am using the SendMeFile website to host these tracks - therefore they will only be available for 14 days from today. Please let me know how using this service goes - and leave a few comments on the choice of tracks too! My choice relates to early influences and tracks that mark changing points in my life - personally and musically. Track 1 Artist: Ozric Tentacles Album: Pungent Effulgent Title: Dissolution (the clouds disperse) Download here This track was once on an elusive tape belonging to my friend Nuala - no-one else had it and it was rarer than rocking horse... It was the soundtrack to the start of my mispent youth and has since been my personal choice for testing stero systems with. Blissed out Psychadelic Rock at its total best - which was also given a dance mix live at Glastonbury just before The Orb came onto the NME stage. Brilliant! Track 2 Artist: JTQ (James Taylor Quartet) Album: Wait a minute Title: Theme From Starsky and Hutch Download here The start of my Jazz/Acid Jazz years started with the James Taylor Quartet who were are tight live as they are on any of their recordings. Jumping into WhiteBoyBobs car with this track blaring out and speeding round to the cash point on the way to the pub was definitely my highlight. Track 3 Artist: Meat Beat Manifesto Album: Storm The Studio Title: God OD Part 1 Download here I had a good friend, Ben Leighton, who lead and influenced my choice of music in the late 80s with classics like "Sun Rising" by The Beloved and introduced me to bands like Dub Syndicate, Front 242, Depth Charge and Baby Ford. A real mix of dub, reggae, dance and sweet smelling smoke used to ooze from his attic bedroom during my 6th form years. He was definitely a strong influence on my music tastes and i salute him. Have'nt seen him for about 10 years though... tosser!
