Yo yo! I'm a cowboy now

In the mid-1990s a couple of Russian-born conceptual artists polled listeners for what the most unappealing kinds of music were. They then created a piece embodying all of them. For example, people hate songs about holidays, choirs, and kids singing.

The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), banjo, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and "elevator" music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commercials and elevator music. Therefore, it can be shown that if there is no covariance--someone who dislikes bagpipes is as likely to hate elevator music as someone who despises the organ, for example--fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population would enjoy this piece.
Click here for "The Most Unwanted Song" More information about the project here. Maybe I'm utterly mired in post-modern ironic appreciation of the kitsch and campy, or perhaps I just like soundclash... ...I think parts of it are quite good. Granted there are some squeaky bits that are annoying but if it was a choice between "The Most Unwanted Song" and anything by Robbie Williams, there's no contest.

Another mix

Ambient Beats & Treats #1 This is another mix I did a couple of years ago. I rediscovered it again the other day buried deep inside my pc. Stylistically it covers the vague ground between ambient, trip hop & lounge. I don't have a track list for it but if you're a fan of this type of music you'll recognise some or maybe all of these tunes.

Just a quicky

Here's a quicky as it's been a bit quiet recently. Bjork vs. Ozric Tentacles, whether its a match made in heaven or in hell its up to you!

Sunday Twosome

Just 2 tracks to cheer you up on a Sunday night before the start of the working week. Firstly a nice chilled folk track called Pink Moon from a chap called Nick Drake, which I adore at the moment. Secondly a classic from Ray Charles called I got a woman which, in my opinion, is better than the sampled/rehashed version that I know it from! Enjoy!

No words ... just music

These are all instrumentals hence the title. Let's start with Tim Blake (who's played with both Hawkwind & Gong) and a little dittty called The Great Pool, this is from one of his solo albums Caldea Music II. Next up, it's The Oroonies (one of the many offshoots of Ozric Tentacles) and something called Dust Devils from their only official release (although they did release several tapes available mainly from gigs at the time) Of Hoof & Horn. Now it's Dark Matter's Past Zero Time from the Seeing Strange Lights album. Dark Matter is the solo project from Helios Creed but it's a lot easier on the ears than his music done under that name. This next one is What Can I Say by Outback from their Dance The Devil Away album. With lots of didgeridoo, melodica, piano & drums this makes an unexpectedly fine little dancing tune. And finally, a tune that effortlessly nearly hits the 18 minute mark, Echoe Waves by Manuel Gottsching. If you've never heard of him he used to play with Ash Ra Tempel and if you've never heard of them there're in the genre known as Krautrock (as are Tangerine Dream). If you like what Ozric Tentacles were doing in the mid to late 80s (but without the tribal & reggae influence) then this is the one for you, only this was recorded in 1975.
