Threesday 7: Influences

Back on my Threesday 2 posting, I was yapping on about a bloke who influenced me musically during the so called "important" years of my life. Again we travel back in time up the windy wooden staircase to his attic bedroom amidst the skateboards, army surplus clothing, rave flyers and the smells of wholefood cookery. This guy knew about stereos. He had separates when I was still bugging my parents for a tape-2-tape system and he had an ordered queue of records waiting to be picked and played as we smoked and laughed the school summer holidays away. These were not records you would find in your local Our Price. Well. Not for a few years at least. Dance music was on the way up and a local small record shop that dedicated itself to selling this rare vinal was in big business. Making trips to Rough Trade in London to pick up the latest tunes was not uncommon too, which also usually involved skateboarding at the South Bank. To this guy - the music really mattered. Times were good and I was in with the right crowd. Here's a selection of the music he played me: Track 1 Artist: Depth Charge Title: Depth Charge Download Here Kung Fu breakbeat at its best - and a good few years before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon too! It was a toss up between this track, "Dead By Dawn" (Groaning Zombie Breakbeat) and "Bounty Killers" (Spaghetti Western Breakbeat). Damn those Ninjas to hell! Track 2 Artist: Izit Title: Stories Download Here My first venture into a "Jazz/soul type" affair was with this track. If i remember rightly, this is only a portion of the full track but it could have been the person who did the mixtape for me cutting the A and B side together. Who knows? Slow and clean cuts for a lazy summers sunday morning. Put the coffee on luv! Track 3 Artist: Derrick May (Mayday) Title: Nude Photo Download Here Now then.. apparently this minimalistic track is hailed as one of the best techno tracks of all time! A track that lead to the forging of a new music style in Detroit and the growth of the electronic music revolution. But on my 12" upstairs, slowly warping in the loft... its a B side to "Strings of life" which would be a total travesty if the rumours are true! It still totally reminds me of sitting in my friend Pete's house smoking when we were supposed to be working on our college course artwork. Ah fuck it! here's the other 2 Depth Charge tracks. I have just been listening to them and they are too cool to be omitted from this Threesday - so you get a Fivesday instead! DTGTF! Download 3, get 2 free! Increase the bass por favor! Track 4 Artist: Depth Charge Title: Bounty Killers Download Here Track 5 Artist: Depth Charge Title: Dead By Dawn Download Here My lawyers have asked me to mention that these files are hosted for 14 days over at SendMeFile. After then they will be taken to the local public toilets and flushed. Expect to see them dancing down a sewer pipe near you sometime on the 20th September!
