Gimme a reason...

OK feebs, a brief description of tracks. Make of it wot you will. I can expect a good slagging if the comp doesn't meet with your approval, but that's wot it's all about. Oh, and Chris - wot's so bad about that...? ******************************** 1: Always on the Run - Lenny Kravitz: Apparently, Lenny insists on only ever recording material using original '60's equipment; valve amps, big barbecue-grilled microphones, the whole business. Seems to work for him, though. This track exemplifies his retro, psychedelic acid-rock Hendrix influences, not least by recruiting Slash [Guns 'n' Roses] on lead guitar. Plus the bass is pure porn. 2: Sympathy for the Devil - Guns 'n' Roses: Slightly more pedestrian rhythm section than the Stone's original due to Matt Sorum's "meat and potato" drumming, but it wins on the grounds of O.T.T. theatricalism, and Slash being the sleaziest guitar in Christendom. Bitch. 3: Take a Look Around - Limp Bizkit: Nu-Metal - and why not? The kids are still, young, fucked up and angry - that's good news isn't it? Except they're yesterday's news. Voted MTV's Best Band in the World one year, and Worst the next. 4: I Just Wanna Live - Good Charlotte: Making "Limp Bizkit" look like your Dad, Good Charlotte are still young, dumb and full o' cum. Don't you just hate them for it? Nice synths though - work well with the three chords, bless 'em...! And they're so cute when they try and look dangerous ;o) 5: Cold Beverage - G. Love & Special Sauce: Special Sauce were producing laid-back, West Coast, white boy hip-hop, while the Fun Lovin' Criminals were still nicking rolos from Mr McKnobiie's girly mag shop, and doing it better than anyone else. Barbecue music, no doubt. And I don't mean that in a bad way. 6: Policeman Skank - Audioweb: Banged to rights! Reminds me of late nineties London, very messy. 7: I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness: I love the idea of The Darkness - the spandex, the guitars, being Queen's little sister in - ironically - a totally un-ironic way. The thing is, this is the only track of theirs I find acceptable. It's a cracker, though, isn't it? 8: Thick 'n' Thin - Black Crowes: Somewhere between Scooby Doo and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is white boy rock 'n' roll in the Jerry Lewis school (if he'd played guitar, that is). Now, hold still, bwoy... 9: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised - Gil Scott Heron: Seventies Harlem Black Voice personified. Not an obvious guitar track, but gets in on the bassline. You can almost smell it.... 10: One in a Million - Guns 'n' Roses: As a counterpoint to the radical seventies Black Power, Axl Rose goes off on one. Only in America.... *sigh* 11: Radar Love - Golden earring: "Hey, Rudy! Grab dat Flying-Vee and let'sh play a little... Rock 'n' Roll!!!" Dutch rockers Golden Earring demonstrate that getting a translator in doesn't always work. "We've got a thing and it's called Radar Love...!". Oh, really...? 12: I Ain't Sofisticated - Ruts: ....umm... 13: The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones: If you ever felt you needed a reason to get up in the morning, the first line of the chorus is it - "I-I-I-I-I!!!! NEVER HAD TO KNOCK ON WOOD...!!!!!..." 14: God's Cop - Happy Mondays: Never really liked these at the time, but was forced into an abrupt about face after someone played me "Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches". Unbelievable when you hear the production that they really were just a bunch of crack heads of the estates, and not a manufactured act. Definitely on one, matey! 15: Daughter - Pearl Jam: Grunge survivors, still head and shoulders above most of the toss that came out of Seattle 16: Rebel Rebel - David Bowie: I can't be arsed doing this any more 17: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix: turn on, skin up, turn over.... no, hang on... turn up, switch off.. oh fuck it...

  • Nice comments Mr Hoop and welcome to the Blog!

When i was listening to the Mondays track today whilst trying to look busy (whilst reading blogs and stuff) i did exactly wonder how they managed to get it to sound so professional! Even the drum machine was in time and everything. I expect some un-sung tech in the studios did the lot for them! Shame they never did an MTV Unplugged show! That could have been class.

  • Kravitz - Pure class, takes me back to seeing him at the Brixton Academy when this came out, shee-it that's over a decade ago!

Sypathy FtD - As a mahoosive GnR fan, I gotta say this is a really disapointingly pedestrian cover. Brings nothing new to the show and fizzles out in an extended jam styley. Soz Cpt Beefy.

Limp Bizkit - first I've heard this one, sounds like Limp Bizkit alright.

GC - Still gargling Joss' golden juices I'm afraid

The rest is Sooper dooper, love a little Dutch rock, B Crowes (how about "Twice as Hard" and "She talks to Angels"?) and of course the mighty Voodoo Chile.

So there we are - I'm itching for the insurance firm to replace my CD burner so I can get involved. I'm looking forward to some robust opinions and pleasant surprises. Can we have a country flavoured one next please Mr Beef?

  • We need someone to offer to do the next CD.

I expect great things from you all!

Where's Mr Taylor though? He's not even accepted the "invitation yet". But then again - a Hits from the 80's including Depeche Mode, Depeche Mode and some more Depeche Mode is not my cuppa tea.

I am gonna do a CD with some real oddities on. Hopefully nothing too mainstream that people will have heard before. We shall see.

  • I suppose I didn't want to start things off with anything too out-there, so if you think it's too "commercial" that's fair enough. Glad it's been listened too and commented on, anyway.

Intrigued - nay, thrilled! - to think what's going to plop on my doormat on the near future....

  • I was referring to Meester Schencks "Radio 1" comment in the previous post.

But thank you for appreciating my flow. I have my kegel exercises to thank for it...
