First posting and testing

Ok. So i have finally got bored of waiting for my CD from captain Beefy O'Keefy and have decided to "go it alone" and release "The Flat CD" via Bittorrent to kick things off. Seeing as apathy seems to rule on this project at the moment the time and effort put into making CDs did'nt seem worth it. The track will burn to CD though. This was a little project that i actually started back in November 2002! I emailled out a list of tracks that would represent the time at the YMCA Flats at CMK and asked for suggestions. I actually lived there in 1995/96 but the time period i am referring to was back in the late 80s/ early nineties. All the tracks are mixed into 1 MP3 file using a program called MixMeister. Some of the tracks mix well together... but how the hell do you mix She Sells Sanctuary into EST cleanly? I don't know.

As per the rules of Music Club, here is my mini review on the choice of tracks:

1. Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald Surely the most important dance track for me. The best memory of this i have was hearing it blaring out from a tent at Glastonbury whilst i was.. er.. off it a bit. It never sounded so good! And as Sharon used to say - it sounded so fast back then too! Truly a ground breaking dance track and is still definitely one of my top 10 tunes of all time.

2. What Time Is Love - The KLF "Springs, strings, new technology the K the L the F and the 'ology" "Mu Mu! Mu Mu!" Need i say any more? Visuals of Rick holding his briefcase up stating "i'm a computer programmer" whilst at Jons in Harrow flow back to me every time i hear this track. Yet another influential dance act from the time and they were also very nonchalant about the whole thing i think - which was cool.

3. Move Any Mountain - The Shamen "Move any moun-taeeeeeen". Certainly one of the best tracks before they went a bit too heavy with Mr C and "Eberneezer Goode". The Shamen wrote pretty clean sounding techno dance stuff with lyrics that did not impose too much on the tracks therefore not turning them into total pop records. I can still remember most of the lyrics from them too!

4. Green Onions - Booker T and the MGs Now. Apparently - and i cannot confirm this as i was not there - this track was played whilst people danced round Sharon and Gee's coffee table in the flat. I think it was probably slightly before "my time" at the flat but i thought i would include it anyway.

5. Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants This was also mainly a fav track for the girls but it is still good all the same. I can't exclude it for just that reason!

6. Step on - Happy Mondays I remember buying this on 12" from Our Price and walking back to the flat to play it. Still sounds good today and is very representative of the time period. Shame Shaun Ryder turned into a fatty bloater (eh Mat?).

7. Little Fluffy Clouds - The ORB Still my favorite ORB track and accompanied me on many an astral journey. It does sound a little dated now and the vocal hook is repeated far too often but it is a classic. 8. The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary When i was still at Stantonbury 6th form and Tim went to Bletchley College (and met Rick, Mat et al) he leant me a tape of the Cult (Wult?) and i took it back to the 6th form common room which at that time was in a room above a day creche. We had a large bass speaker in the corner and i put the track on expecting everyone to love it. But they were into The Doors and The Cure at the time - so it did'nt go down too well. Needless to say i crept off with my skateboard never to play it there again!

9. E.S.T. (Trip To The Moon) - Alien Sex Fiend I was not sure if i should have this track on the CD really as it is sooo bloody long! It reminds me of Mat and always puts pictures of goths in my head for some reason. I bet Alien Sex Fiend were nice smartly dressed people really. Slow plodding guitar tainted depress techno stuff i suppose. Good though.

10. 3AM Eternal - KLF "Eternal-o-a-ohhhhh". Another classic by the KLF and a nice inclusion on the CD. I do tend to get the 2 tracks on here confused and can't remember quite which rap is from which. Shame the rapper got killed though - or he would be able to tell me.

11. Deelite - Groove Is In The Heart Another seminal track of the flat era. Complete with funky music, odd sound effects and spangly dance costumes. Sharon, Gee, Mel and Taj at their £1.99 2 Litre Sparkling Lambrusco Bianco best. Anyone for powdered milk?

12. Cubik (Pan American Excursion) - 808 State Whilst i was at Bletchley College i went on a week long trip to visit Dominic in Manchester to do some artwork and get cultured. What really happened was that we spent several days running around Mosside pissed and stoned shouting "Haway the lads" at the tops of our voices, eating Vege Samosas from a takeaway called the Cuckoo Chef and listening to this track. I think i also brought it back to the flat crew and we all learned to rejoice in the church of 808 state.

13. It's Yer Money - The Wonder Stuff "It's yer Terbut i'm after baby!". Another classy track from the flat era which reminds me of Tim and Rick alot. This would be playing in Tims car as we cruised from woughton to wolverton, from CMK to the YMCA.

14. The Sun Rising - Beloved Nice floaty dancy stuff. The Beloved at their best. I never forget how many million remixes were made of this track - but i have some in my loft on vinal along with other Beloved tracks too. I can remember playing this track with the doors open in Sharon and Gee's flat and the evening sunlight streaming in. Probably whilst Rick was pissing off the balcony though...

And there concludes my mini review of the tracks on the CD. I have left off some important artists probably such as Cud, Stone Roses, The Waterboys, Sinead O'connor and anything from the Dirty Dancing original soundtrack. As i was writing them i am also not 100% sure that all the tracks are from that time period. Maybe you will point out my mistakes - who knows.
