I'm a cowboy now

In the mid-1990s a couple of Russian-born conceptual artists polled listeners for what the most unappealing kinds of music were. They then created a piece embodying all of them. For example, people hate songs about holidays, choirs, and kids singing.

The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), banjo, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and "elevator" music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commercials and elevator music. Therefore, it can be shown that if there is no covariance--someone who dislikes bagpipes is as likely to hate elevator music as someone who despises the organ, for example--fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population would enjoy this piece.

Maybe I'm utterly mired in post-modern ironic appreciation of the kitsch and campy, or perhaps I just like soundclash... ...I think parts of it are quite good. Granted there are some squeaky bits that are annoying but if it was a choice between "The Most Unwanted Song" and anything by Robbie Williams, there's no contest.

This is another mix I did a couple of years ago.
I rediscovered it again the other day buried deep inside my pc.
Stylistically it covers the vague ground between ambient, trip hop & lounge.
I don't have a track list for it but if you're a fan of this type of music you'll recognise some or maybe all of these tunes.

Just a quicky

Here's a quicky as it's been a bit quiet recently.

Firstly a nice chilled folk track called Pink Moon from a chap called Nick Drake, which I adore at the moment.

Secondly a classic from Ray Charles called I got a woman which, in my opinion, is better than the sampled/rehashed version that I know it from!

Enjoy!

No words ... just music

These are all instrumentals hence the title.

Let's start with Tim Blake (who's played with both Hawkwind & Gong) and a little dittty called The Great Pool, this is from one of his solo albums Caldea Music II.

Next up, it's The Oroonies (one of the many offshoots of Ozric Tentacles) and something called Dust Devils from their only official release (although they did release several tapes available mainly from gigs at the time) Of Hoof & Horn.

Now it's Dark Matter's Past Zero Time from the Seeing Strange Lights album. Dark Matter is the solo project from Helios Creed but it's a lot easier on the ears than his music done under that name.

This next one is What Can I Say by Outback from their Dance The Devil Away album. With lots of didgeridoo, melodica, piano & drums this makes an unexpectedly fine little dancing tune.

And finally, a tune that effortlessly nearly hits the 18 minute mark, Echoe Waves by Manuel Gottsching. If you've never heard of him he used to play with Ash Ra Tempel and if you've never heard of them there're in the genre known as Krautrock (as are Tangerine Dream). If you like what Ozric Tentacles were doing in the mid to late 80s (but without the tribal & reggae influence) then this is the one for you, only this was recorded in 1975.

Home Grown Dub Mix#3

Now that summers here, even though it seems to have rained every day since the drought warnings, it's time for some summery music.

The full version is 1:17:30 in length but to get it up on File Lodge I had to chop it up in 4 roughly equal part.

Cross fade to the Brazilians and some producers brilliant idea of throwing in some samba.

It wasn't always this way you know. Nostalgia may not be what it was but we know for damn sure that Sports got a better class of music back in ver good old days.

In time honoured reverse order, we start with the ginger step-child of Saturday sport coverage World of Sport, take a listen and try not to imagine Hurricanes and Spitfires flying off to give Jerry a bloody nose. Possibly with Dickie Davies in a white silk scarf.

Quite simply the daddy, if only 'cos it was drilled into your brain throughout the seventies Grandstand needs no introduction, we all love the swoopy kettle drum, but did you know about the acid rock guitar solo in this full version, no kidding! It then kicks up a minor 3rd keychange for the big push to the end. I can see Frank Bough in a beige suit leaning over the teleprinter now.

See how many young colleagues you can fool into believing this is a lost blaxploitation flick theme a la Bobby Womack or Issac Hayes. Of course not it's Superstars from when Brian Jacks and Daly Thompson ruled the roost. The tune goes under the appropriate name of Heavy
Action and it's written by Johnny Pearson, perhaps even more famous in America where for the past three decades or so it's been the theme tune to telly institution MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL. But America nicked it off us, which is great. Takes you back to lying in front of the telly on a Saturday evening after fish fingers and chips.

All MP3s from TV Cream, open them in a new tab or right click to download.

Happy birthday Ma'am

Sorry another album mashup project - but this is certainly one of the better ones, and you can also torrent the whole kit and caboodle and save some bandwidth

The pomp and ceremony of classic Queen (admit it, you love it slags!) mashed with hip hop and a few nice samples.

No theme just random

No theme this time just a few tracks that came up on random play at work this morning.

Arguably started by the Parkspliced (Blur's Parklife remixed by various artists) project and popularised by The Beastles (Beatles v Beastie Boys).

For a new take on a trip-hop classic go here for Portishead, Dummy remixed.

I'm not convinced personally, but there are some interesting things going on, it may be a grower...

Now That's What I Call Satire vol1

Ho hum, another politically inspired song. Maybe I should buy a sparkly black suit and start talking about fatcher. Perhaps not, it may end up with hanging out with Andrew Lloyd Webber and writing shite books. Anyhoo, this is for Rick-o-teen, 'cos I mentioned it on his blog. But it'll probably appeal to Mr Noxious too I'll wager.

A mash up of political comment, Aerosmith and Nancy Sinatra.

"Hard Being Poor" Timberjack Featuring Tat (Aka Shasta Screams)
It's hard being poor. Damn straight. The sound of urban frustration. Word.

"George Bush Is An Islamic Fundamentalist" Rub Featuring Bill Clinton On Sax
On a jazzier tip, lazy beats with a mellow acoustic feel.

"Pains Of Life" GM Baby
Turntablist beats and scratching, very much redolent of Michael Franti's Spearhead, but with a London twist.

Psych #1

My 1st post here so lets start with some guitar/synth based psychedelic tracks and get on to the dancey stuff later (although that button moon /billy ray cyrus sounds interesting)

1 Beautiful People - Rilly Groovy.mp3
Beautiful People - Rilly groovy
This track is mostly made from Hendrix samples (as is the whole album it's from) but with some more up to date beats, well up to date if you're in the mid 90s when it was made.

2 Bevis Frond - Once More.mp3
Bevis Frond - Once more
This track is one of my favorites with lots of guitar work outs and some familiar samples if you're of an age similar to me.

3 Hawkwind - Motorhead.mp3
Hawkwind - Motorhead
This is one of my favorite groups doing an unusual version, still with Lemmy "singing" but not at all like the more familiar version.

4 Ozric Tentacles - Obstacular Explosion.mp3
Ozric Tentacles - Obstacular explosion
Another favorite group with a live track from '86 that just reminds me of my younger tripped out festival experiences.

5 Spacemen 3 - Revolution.mp3
Spacemen 3 - Revolution
Yet another favorite of mine, with lots more guitar but not screaming leads this time, just lots of repeating riffs and subversive lyrics.

New member!

I have invited a new member to the Music Club fold - Jaffa Da Hut.

His music taste is quite diverse - and that's diverse as in "good" not as in "Button Moon vs Billy Ray Cyrus" (MrNoxious).

Lets get this shit off the ground again. Someone post a few tracks please!

I have copies of them on 12 inch in my loft, slowly warping in the summer, contracting and cracking in the winter. A future eBay goldmine? I think not. If I still had a turntable I could test them and then flog them!

LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Remix)
Recently played on Radio1 (thanks to Captain Beefy for calling me when it was on - sorry I was a little vague - but you inspired this posting!).

LFO - Tan-Ta-Ra (Moby Remix)
Another LFO classic. I think this was a B-Side but i'm not sure now.

Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco
Cheese, cheese and more pure cheese. This is still one of my favorite Doors tracks and is taken from the excellent Morrison Hotel album.

I once walked into my local record shop, World Beats and saw this 12 inch record in a brown sleeve with a large white hand on the front. Back in those days I always judged a book by its cover - and I was'nt disappointed!

Just came across this one on Soulseek and thought it was quite good. We can host them over at FileLodge who will host the files forever up to a maximum of 300mb per signin.

And, also, as we can put direct links to the files, we could then get listed at places like The Hype Machine.

Thoughts people? I currently post 3 tracks a week and that is probably enough. We are not looking for lots per day, but 10 a week from various posters would be cool.

Threesday 9: Trippytych

Cripes - already made it to Threesday 9! Nearly getting to over 30 tracks now. I intend to do a "best of Threesday" CD at some point so watch this space.

Another triptych of difference here guys. Fast, Slow, Didgeridoo...

Track 1
Artist: Kenichi Sugiyama
Title: Buggie Running Beeps
Download Here
Something a little faster for Mr Nox. Part of the soundtrack to the game Rez on the PS2. It takes me back to playing the game immediately! Maybe because it is the first track - on the first level - and I didn't get much further than that! Sorry - just noticed that this is a WMA file so appologies if you get issues running it.

Artist: Nomads Of Dub
Title: Spirals
Download Here
Wow! I have got very little dub on my iPod at the moment but came across this track on a compilation by Alex Paterson of The Orb fame. Real laid back spacey dub - for when you really can't be bothered to do any more work. And its only 10am.

Track 3
Artist: Outback
Title: Animal Life
Download Here
I had the fortune to see this band live several times in my younger years. In their guises as Outback and Dr Didg. The guitar on this track was an inspiration to my playing for quite a while.

All tracks can be downloaded from the same Threesday 9 project page here.

Deep vein memory regression and past life therapy has revealed that the memory of these files will be transient in their methodologies and will only be hosted at Savefile for 14 days. Sendmefile has been eradicated from the Music Club by the use of Electro shock therapy and will no longer be used due to too many errors.

Savefile.com will keep these files online forever - providing they have at least one download every 14 days! And I can now also see how many people are downloading the files too! So I can tell how popular they are!

Threesday 8: Goldies

Track 1
Artist: The Verve
Title: Bitter Sweet Symphony (UNKLE Remix)
Download Here
In an attempt to wean my son of Steps and S Club Juniors I whacked on one of the music video channels the other day and watched the whole video for this track which I have not seen all the way through before. I have also had this UNKLE remix of the same track, which i found through Tyoogle sitting around for a few weeks too - so here you are!

Track 2
Artist: Suns Of Arqa
Title: Acid Tablas
Download Here
Acid indeed! Dub meets irish indian takeaway in this old track. Still sitting on one of those old busted up cassettes i still have somewhere. Excellent stuff! More to come chaps!

Track 3
Artist: Dead Can Dance
Title: Fortune Present Gifts Not According To The Book
Download Here
Now this group takes some getting used to. Fronted by some geezer called Bernard and Lisa Gerrard who also sang on the sountrack to Gladiator, Dead Can Dance are an odd hybrid of ambient, choral, medieval folk stuff. I will break you in gently with this track. Nice and melodic. I recommend the album, Aion and also The Serpents Egg.

The official inquest into The Music Club instigated, lead and proceeded over by George Bush found that all files will be held only for 14 days by SendMeFile. After then they will be sent to play golf. As long as nothing more important comes to interrupt them.

Again we travel back in time up the windy wooden staircase to his attic bedroom amidst the skateboards, army surplus clothing, rave flyers and the smells of wholefood cookery.

This guy knew about stereos. He had separates when I was still bugging my parents for a tape-2-tape system and he had an ordered queue of records waiting to be picked and played as we smoked and laughed the school summer holidays away. These were not records you would find in your local Our Price. Well. Not for a few years at least. Dance music was on the way up and a local small record shop that dedicated itself to selling this rare vinal was in big business. Making trips to Rough Trade in London to pick up the latest tunes was not uncommon too, which also usually involved skateboarding at the South Bank. To this guy - the music really mattered.

Times were good and I was in with the right crowd. Here's a selection of the music he played me:

Title: Depth Charge
Download Here
Kung Fu breakbeat at its best - and a good few years before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon too! It was a toss up between this track, "Dead By Dawn" (Groaning Zombie Breakbeat) and "Bounty Killers" (Spaghetti Western Breakbeat). Damn those Ninjas to hell!

Track 2

Title: Stories

My first venture into a "Jazz/soul type" affair was with this track. If i remember rightly, this is only a portion of the full track but it could have been the person who did the mixtape for me cutting the A and B side together. Who knows? Slow and clean cuts for a lazy summers sunday morning. Put the coffee on luv!

Track 3

Title: Nude Photo

Now then.. apparently this minimalistic track is hailed as one of the best techno tracks of all time! A track that lead to the forging of a new music style in Detroit and the growth of the electronic music revolution. But on my 12" upstairs, slowly warping in the loft... its a B side to "Strings of life" which would be a total travesty if the rumours are true! It still totally reminds me of sitting in my friend Pete's house smoking when we were supposed to be working on our college course artwork.

Ah fuck it! here's the other 2 Depth Charge tracks. I have just been listening to them and they are too cool to be omitted from this Threesday - so you get a Fivesday instead! DTGTF! Download 3, get 2 free! Increase the bass por favor!

After much track picking, changing, editing, and mixing I've finally burnt a CD that I'm not quite happy with, but can't be arsed to do any more.
I've neither kept to a theme nor tried to please everyone, just picked some tracks that I like. You'll either love it or hate it, or quite like it, or find it mildly annoying, or be completely indifferent.

Here's the album cover if you choose to make it all proper.

And on to the Tracklist:

1. Jeff Mills - Berlin

Thought i'd kick off the compilation hard and fast, the way I like it!
I could have picked almost any choon on Mills' Waveform Transmission - Volume 1 album, beautifully crafted minimal techno. bouncybouncybouncybouncy

2. Dave Clarke - Thunder

In the words of Pink "God is a DJ", that DJ just happens to be Dave Clarke; awesome minimal techno at it's english best, to be found on the Red Three 12" just before The Storm.

3. Green Velvet - La La Land

Hypnotic beats from crazy Cajmere, perfect for the crazy person. Has a certain gay sound to it. Groove to it or be annoyed by it.

4. Boney M - Rasputin

The kings of dance, knowingly using killer basslines, you can't help boogying along to any one of their hits. I chose Rasputin for the poignant story that unfolds via the medium of lyrics... Ohhhh those Russians.

5. Coldcut feat QBert

I'm a big fan of turntablism and Q-bert is one of it's best purveyors.

6. DJ Yoda - George Formby Turntabalised

A bit more turntablism, this time from the stables of DJ Yoda, his DJ sets have to be heard (and seen) to be believed. This track is a short taster, incorporating my other favourite George Formby. Bonus.

7. Miss Kittin - Professional Distortion

Not to be mistaken for the anarchic big brother kitten. Electroclash? Rock meets Blip-Hop?

8. Simple Minds - Theme For Great Cities

So much better than the house remix by Dave Lee that was done many years later. I think 'back in the day' (or 'back in the day' before I was born) this was called prog rock.

9. Royksopp - What Else Is There

I liked their "Melody A.M" album, but the followup "The Understanding" was nowhere near as good(imho)...apart from this track.

10. Osymyso - Fiver to Bigwig

The genius of Osymyso remaster Bright Eyes, a twitchy nose and the largest pair of ears he'd ever seen!

11. Orbital - Doctor?

A DrWho remix??? How bizarre, yet so right.

12. Public Enemy - Bring Tha Noize(With Anthrax)

Not the first time there's been a rap/metal duo crossover stylee thing, more famously with Run DMC and Aerosmith which I loved at the time, but radio repetition dulled my senses on that one.

13.
Prime time radio gaff, rather humerous.

14, Rhubarb & Custard

The themetune, no remix, no bootleg mix, just the theme tune, ORIGINAL
Possibly one of the most beautifully crafted musical pieces in the history of themetunes to kids tv shows involving badly drawn cartoon cats and dogs, ever.

15. Dr Evil & Mini Me - Hard Knock Life

Wow that Dr Evil sure can rap.

16. Osymyso - Intro Expansion 2

Another slice of Osymyso, I had to put this at the end as it's brilliance(TM) would have been impossible to follow. Oompaloompabeegeenirvana

I'm back from my hedonistic week away at Cafe Dirtbox and have smuggled you some new tunes back in my hand luggage hidden inside my copy of "Sudoku tips for Saddoku twats".
I was going to make the theme of this weeks Threesday into a remix homage to the heyday of Britpop which happened a mere 10 years ago. The truth of the matter is that i failed to find the third remixed track to make the threesome I was looking for. The Moby remix of Blur's catchy and rudely entitled hit, "Beetlebum", was not up to much... So you get two Britpop remixes and another track I forgot all about (which may not be a bad thing after all).

Early 90s. Britpop. Cool Brittania. First job. First girlfriend. First shag? Queue the first track!
The non-abusing UNKLE DJ Shadow rips and distorts the UKs carrot munching, tractor driving, trip-hop, break-beat stars. I tried to see them at Glasto' one year when they played in a tent the size of WhiteBoyBobs pants. Needless to say, I never saw or heard them as it was far too crowded and I was well off my head on acid anyway watching Ozrics on the travellers stage! Or did I dream it?

Title: Wonderwall Of Broken Dreams 2

This track has layed dormant in the "My Shared Folder" area on my hard disk for quite a while. Not that it never gets played, it's just that... well... I feel a little embarassed that I like it. Sort of like fancying someone off Eastenders - your mates would laugh if they knew, but you just know in your loins that something feels right. Its probably the best (technically) remix of Wonderwall there is if you exclude the 1-hit-wunder version by Mike Flowers Pops and that version I do on my guitar when the wife has gone out. Chuck in a heavy dose of the newly crowned "kings of soft-n-fluffy punk" Greenday and a smattering of lyrics from the dolphin friendly, "we were here before Coldplay" scottie rockers Travis and there you have it.

Title: Jaques Your Body
Download Here
This track reminds you of "Spaceman" by Babylon Zoo - if only due to the fact that it is a total let down when you hear the whole song. They fooled you into buying it after they played the best bit of the song on a cool advert. Just like they did with the adverts for Madagascar! My sons refer to this track (and the car) as the "Bumbaday" and I know it as nothing less than "disappointing". Thankfully, the rest of the album is crap too. Enjoy!

As per usual the files here are for personal, internal and anal use only between consenting adults and are not permitted to be broadcast on any christian radio station, "Trevor Bayliss" wind-up radios or molar filling alien message receiver devices. Those "very, very nice people" over at SendMeFile have again hosted the files for a limited earth time of 14 days. After then they will be removed, wiped, deleted and purged from every recycle bin in the land by the hand of the almighty internet godhead (me).

It was a bit of a "oh crap! - what do I put on this week" as I have not pre-planned a theme as per the other Threesdays, but... What do you mean you did'nt notice the themes? Tsk... All my hard work just goes to waste...

Track 1
Artist: The Herbaliser
Title: Nahmean Nahm Sayin
Download Here
This shuffled onto my iPod whilst I was trotting round Tesco the other night feeling lonely and looking like I was there on the pull and really cheered me up. I had'nt realised how good it was until all the minger checkout ladies started bangin' their butts on their barcode scanners to the dirty rhythms leaking from my earphones. Sweary hip-hip funk type stuff at its best.

Track 2
Artist: Skindred
Title: Pressure
Download Here
Me ol matey Bigfootcookie was talking about Skindred the other day on his blog so I thought I had better include a track for the uninitiated. Loud, harsh, lyrical and harmonious dread skank rock rap. Not one of my favorite tracks but good all the same.

Track 3
Artist: Turin Breaks
Title: Thrown Stone
Download Here
Turin Breaks are again back on my "most played" list after listening to my Nephew belt out a version of this track on his acoustic guitar the other night. My net connection is down at home at the moment otherwise i would have had the tablature for this one down already! Damn you AOL and your crappy tech support!
Its the type of music I aspire to...slow, acoustic and melodic. Just pure class (so sez me anyway). If I ever get to see them live I will snap their little fingers off for being too good.

But this time I brought you three tracks which have been re-sampled or re-cut to form new digital masterpieces. We all know that the way to Amarillo is just off junction 7 of the M25, but the road from Jazz to Techno is not quite as far...

Track 1
Artist: Herbie Hancock
Title: Bring Down the Birds
Download here
A little ditty from "The Rocket" Herbie Hancock that gifts the baseline to a classic dee-lite-full early 90s dance track.

Track 2
Artist: Buddy Rich
Title: The Beat Goes On
Download here
Buddy Rich, a Jazz Drummer biffs out his version of this track by Sonny and Cher and it is given a techno re-working in the early 90s. Shame, but the beat does go on a little too long on this....

Track 3
Artist: Bobby Dorough
Title: Three is a Magic Number
Download here
It takes three legs to make a tripod or to make a table stand,
And it takes three wheels to make a vehicle called a tricycle
And every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less,
You don’t have to guess
That it’s three
Can’t you see?
It’s a magic number

You can mail me an address to post it to - or exchange a pint of foaming ale for a CD. They're sat next to me all burnt and everything. They're off a spindle of cheap CD's (I'm unemployed dammit!) - so no case I'm afraid, but you've got one lying around haven't you? Course you do, it's over there in that pile. To make it look super wizzy fire up the old printer...
You can download the CD artwork here cover
and here back. Don't forget to make the files CMYK before you print them out to get the best results.

Straight Out Of Compton 1:49 Nina Gordon
Now I'm a chap who likes a cover version - but It's got to bring something new to the table, and I think this does. If you like the sound of a posh, pretty bird with a filthy mouth look no further.

Baby Love Child 3:32 Pizzicato Five
Quite simply my fave Pizzicato Five track, and I can't believe Mr Askey didn't beat me to it Music Clubbing this tune. If you're a fan of winsome, melodic beats in the LemonJelly mould (no pun intended) then I recommend you check them out.

Hey hey 16K 2:50 MJ Hibbert
Geekariffic! Low, low production values, but great songwriting shines through. Lyrics that will probably bring a tear to the throat and a lump to the eye of most Music-Club members as they regale junior colleagues with war stories of the early days of computing... 'of course back then we didn't have zeroes for binary, we had to use the letter O'

RIGBY REGGAE 3:19 Loo & Placido
To be honest I could have filled an entire CD with Bootleg mash-ups, but there's only so many times you can listen to the oh-so original combination of Eminem, Missy and the Strokes, add a dash of Aguleira acapella for real stand-out. That said Messrs Loo & Placido make a superior mash-up thats a little bit different. And it makes you think

Programming is a poetry for our time 2:18 MJ Hibbert
More geekery from Mr Hibbert, trust me it's a grower

Original Cold Scrubs 3:52 Braces Tower
The second bootleg offering - a little more mainstream but a great example. I suspect that a lot of the popularity of the bootleg scene is entirely due to the fact that it makes it okay for Nathan Barley type wankers like me to listen to great pop like S-Club 7 and Britney in an 'oh so post modern way'

The symbol our nation 3:48 MJ Hibbert
Final track from the lo-fi troubadour, not only is he a geek, but a Pub enthusiast! Again great songwriting overcoming the pound-shop recording quality. And the Backing Vox give it a rather garage-gospel feel that puts me in mind of The Housemartins - praise indeed.

Build 4:48 The Housemartins
Speaking of which... This is on here 'cos it always makes me think of Milton Keynes, and that always makes me think of you guys, and then I... excuse me I have something in my eye.

The Rooster 3:57 Big Boi Speakerboxxx
Is it Hip-Hop? Soul? R&B? I dunno either, but it was one of the finest albums of the year that's for darn sure! Typically contrary I prefer Big Boi's half.

Dr. Baker 4:08 The Beta Band
Psychadelic techno Folk beards The Beta Band, with a sonambulent summer groove to get you nodding away, whether it's in the car or on the sofa with a bottle of the old Vino Collapso.

Dog Got A Bone 5:58 The Beta Band
Ditto

Lay Lady Lay 4:37 Magnet (With Gemma Hayes)
The Scandinavian countries punch above their weight musically, quality and quantity that puts their feckless south european cousins to shame. Some put the quality of Northern Europe's music down to a more dour outlook, combined with a massive enthusiasm for binge drinking, both of which are sadly lacking on the Med. Anyhoo Norway's Magnet prove once more that old Mr Zimmerman writes a great song, and other people perform them better than he does. Jimi, Byrds, Stones etc etc.

Alone Again Or 3:17 Love
It's a classic hippy mariachi stomper.

AudioTrack 18 0:28 Cassette Boy
Christmas classic, fiddled with by Cassette Boy. Imagine an unemployed stoner with cassette decks a great sense of humour and a big bag of weed. I think you hear me knocking, I think I'm coming in.

Reign (Ft. Ian Brown And Mani) 5:42 Unkle Never Never Land (Promo)
If you don't know about the UNKLE project then you my friend are in for a treat. Banish thoughts of Mr Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo, and direct your mind to a beautiful fusion of dance beats and musicians playing 'proper' instruments. It's a dangerous thing to say, especially in Manchester where the Stone Roses hold a mythical significance, but I really think Ian Brown is currently producing his best work. Oooh controversial.

Rez 9:57 Underworld
Let's up the pace, the final sprint to the chequered flag is upon us. For a LOT of folk I know this tune brings a wry smile to the face and dare I say a little lump to the throat. When we'd throw an all nighter the DJ would make sure and drop this when he knew everybody was at the optimum point of chemical imbalance, can you feel the rushes? I'm fuckin' peaking man!

Joliver 1:36 Cassette Boy

Again, in the absence of any proper webspace, I am using the SendMeFile website to host these tracks - therefore they will only be available for 14 days from today.
Please let me know how using this service goes - and leave a few comments on the choice of tracks too! My choice relates to early influences and tracks that mark changing points in my life - personally and musically.

Track 1
Artist: Ozric Tentacles
Album: Pungent Effulgent
Title: Dissolution (the clouds disperse)
Download here
This track was once on an elusive tape belonging to my friend Nuala - no-one else had it and it was rarer than rocking horse... It was the soundtrack to the start of my mispent youth and has since been my personal choice for testing stero systems with. Blissed out Psychadelic Rock at its total best - which was also given a dance mix live at Glastonbury just before The Orb came onto the NME stage. Brilliant!

Track 2
Artist: JTQ (James Taylor Quartet)
Album: Wait a minute
Title: Theme From Starsky and Hutch
Download here
The start of my Jazz/Acid Jazz years started with the James Taylor Quartet who were are tight live as they are on any of their recordings. Jumping into WhiteBoyBobs car with this track blaring out and speeding round to the cash point on the way to the pub was definitely my highlight.

Track 3
Artist: Meat Beat Manifesto
Album: Storm The Studio
Title: God OD Part 1
Download here
I had a good friend, Ben Leighton, who lead and influenced my choice of music in the late 80s with classics like "Sun Rising" by The Beloved and introduced me to bands like Dub Syndicate, Front 242, Depth Charge and Baby Ford. A real mix of dub, reggae, dance and sweet smelling smoke used to ooze from his attic bedroom during my 6th form years. He was definitely a strong influence on my music tastes and i salute him. Have'nt seen him for about 10 years though... tosser!

Threesday

Welcome to the first of my new bi-weekly "Taoski's Threesday EP" postings.

Actually its just an excuse to try out this website I found called SendMeFile which allows you to upload any type of file up to 30mb and have it accessible for 14 days!

So here's 3 tracks to keep all you Music Club members in the groove until the next CD is mailed out.

Track 1:
Artist: Gene Harris
Title: Sittin' Duck
Download here
A nice Summer Jazz/Funk track to put a bounce in your step and some jive in your mouth, ya mutha!

Track 2:
Artist: Amorphous Androdynous (The Isness)
Title: The Galaxial Pharmaceutical
Download here
A nice floaty springtime track which would probably be classed as "electronic folk" if you heard it anywhere else. But here we will just call it "nice".

Track 3:
Artist: The Mohawks
Title: The Champ
Download here
Let's play spot the sample shall we? Classy, low down dirty Jazz for a chillin Wednesday afternoon in the office.

Enjoy!

Wrick Wripple's track listing

Well, I’ve actually got round to doing a compilation. I even surprise myself sometimes. I’ve tried to get the flow right, but there is quite a mix of styles.
Hopefully there’s sumting in there for everyone. I wanted to do a truly eclectic mix, but it would have been a double CD at that rate.

Those of you that couldn't be arsed to turn out last night will get yours in the post. Email me your addresses please so I know I've definitely got them right.

1. Playground Love – Air: Loungecore at its very best, I just love these guys. It’s a great big duvet of a song that takes me back to the seventies and a childhood of cheesecloth shirts, tank tops and brown flares. I defy anyone to not like it.

2. Teardrop – Massive Attack. Liz Fraser’s barely audible singing is just fabulous. Another dreamy track.

3. Pride’s Paranoia – Futureshock. Mentalist lyrics, but extremely catchy (or annoying). I really thought this lot were going to do well and give a much needed kick start to the dance music scene, but it was not to be.

4. Just Let Go (Thin White Duke Remix) – Fischerspooner: These guys were the lot that kicked off the whole “electroclash” scene back in 2000. The first album had a more experimental sound but was also very similar to early Depeche Mode and Gary Numan. This album is more conventional and coherent but still maintains that 80’s feel.

5. Digital Love – Daft Punk. Our Gallic cousins making another appearance. They were good, and then they went and released the best dance music album ever recorded with Discovery. They were gods! Now they’re shit. I don’t even like house music, but since I bought this back in 2001 it has rarely been out of constant rotation.

6. Super Sport – Tipper: This guy basically invented nu skool breaks. He owns two 1970 Dodge Challengers, has one of the loudest sound systems on the planet in one of them (I know - I’ve heard it!), and races the other at Santa Pod. What a dude! Anyway, back to the track. Bleep, bleep, rumble, rumble. Oh dear, I’ve just had my internal organs rearranged by some sub bass so low only Blue Whales can hear it. Play this loud and totally fuck up your bass bins.

7. Crunch – Dillinja: One of the oldest d’n’b artists still going, and as this tech step track from last year’s Killa-Hertz album proves – the man’s still got it. Makes me want to drop the suspension on my Merc, black out the windows, put 20” chrome rims on it and 4 x 12” subwoofers in the boot. Mash it up!!!!

8. Nobody’s Listening – Linkin Park: I just love the Japanese sounding flute (or whatever) at the start of the track. It’s soooo Kung Fu. Anyway, take those George W Bush loving, cock sucking Limp Bizkit mofo’s to school bwoyee!

9. Ich Will – Rammstein : Foot stomping Teutonic rock! Not arf mate. Often accused of being neo nazis because they just look and sound as though they should be. During the current "Reise, Reise" tour they have worn lederhosen, corsets and vague military uniforms with steel helmets, while during "Mutter" the group kept to the themes of the album artwork and descended onto the stage from a giant uterus wearing nappies. Like some Grimm fairytale brought to life.

10. Feiticeira – Deftones. No, I don’t know how you pronounce it either, but these guys are awesome live – one time I saw them I couldn’t hear properly for 3 days afterwards. Trust me, this is a grower.

11. Sweet Emotion – Aerosmith: Opening scene of Dazed and Confused – a 1970 Pontiac GTO rolls along at about 3 mph to the sound of this song. Aerosmith when they were good. Who says heroine is a bad drug?

12. Low Rider – War: Getting the 70’s vibe here? This track is on here purely because it’s summery and sleazy. Hey man, don’t Bogart that joint!

13. Across 110th Street – Bobby Womack: I don’t know squat about Bobby Womack or this track, except I love it and it makes me want to strut around in platforms and a big floppy white hat. Where’s my fookin’ money beeeeeeatch?

14. Theme from Shaft – Isaac Hayes. I don’t have to give any reasons for why this track is on here now do I?

15. Triple Trouble – Beastie Boys. From the Best Beastie Boys album yet. The limit for attaching a single file is 10mb so each track would have to be an email. Also, i'm not sure if they allow .MP3 extensions to be used or not so testing would need to be done.

Any thoughts?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://music-o-blog.blogspot.com/2005/04/just-thought-2gb-hmmm.html' title='Just a thought... 2gb? 1. Roma, Pizzicato Five.
Hear ye, hear ye. This band is really quite good.

The exercise here is to fit the next two into a music category, dance, D&B, retro funk-adelic soul?

2. Swing it back, Avenue A
3. Sally’s Walk, Scammers

Now I don’t usually go for covers (taint as good as the original <sniff>) but the next two are real crackers.

4. Polk Salad Annie, Tony Joe White.
For those of you who don’t know (and shame on you) Polk Salad is a kinda green turnip grown way down south, Mississippi way.

5. Gloria, Patti Smith

6. Hit The Road Jack, Ray Charles.

7. Spanish Stroll, Mink DeVille
Oh yeah, easy going cruising music. Click your fingers, hang your arm out the car window and easy off the accelerator.

Two more covers worthy of attention.

8. The Sound of Silence, Carmen McRae
Cracking rendition grommet.

9. Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Ananda Shanker
Toe stomping rock track with Sitars, weird no?

10. Baddest Ruffest, Backyard Dog
Know you dis! Starts off manic and keeps on going.

11. Poison Flour, Dr. Alimantado.
An object lesson in a proper Jamaican accent.

12. I See Girls, Studio B

13. A Minha Menina, The Bees.
It’s all Portuguese to me.

14. Pr0wno Rodeo, Menlo Park

15. Mon Amour Tokyo, Pizzicato Five.
Ahhh the song that started off this strange odyssey. I can remember cruising down the M1 to work in the beige Cortina with this blasting out the tinny speakers. It was record of the week on whatever radio station it was and came on at the same time every morning, but could I track it down? Hell no. I finally managed to get 2 CDs in the US and haven’t looked back.

16. Happy Ending, Pizzicato Five.
Relax, reflect, we hope you have enjoyed your journey, please fly music club again.

Music Blog Updates and Comments

Nice to see we are having a bit of a discussion on here about the tracks from the first CD! I can also set it so new postings to the Music Blog can be emailled out too. So you won't have to check it so often.

Make of it wot you will. I can expect a good slagging if the comp doesn't meet with your approval, but that's wot it's all about.

Oh, and Chris - wot's so bad about that...?

********************************

1: Always on the Run - Lenny Kravitz: Apparently, Lenny insists on only ever recording material using original '60's equipment; valve amps, big barbecue-grilled microphones, the whole business. Seems to work for him, though. This track exemplifies his retro, psychedelic acid-rock Hendrix influences, not least by recruiting Slash [Guns 'n' Roses] on lead guitar. Plus the bass is pure porn.

2: Sympathy for the Devil - Guns 'n' Roses: Slightly more pedestrian rhythm section than the Stone's original due to Matt Sorum's "meat and potato" drumming, but it wins on the grounds of O.T.T. theatricalism, and Slash being the sleaziest guitar in Christendom. Bitch.

3: Take a Look Around - Limp Bizkit: Nu-Metal - and why not? The kids are still, young, fucked up and angry - that's good news isn't it? Except they're yesterday's news. Voted MTV's Best Band in the World one year, and Worst the next.

4: I Just Wanna Live - Good Charlotte: Making "Limp Bizkit" look like your Dad, Good Charlotte are still young, dumb and full o' cum. Don't you just hate them for it? Nice synths though - work well with the three chords, bless 'em...! And they're so cute when they try and look dangerous ;o)

5: Cold Beverage - G. Love & Special Sauce: Special Sauce were producing laid-back, West Coast, white boy hip-hop, while the Fun Lovin' Criminals were still nicking rolos from Mr McKnobiie's girly mag shop, and doing it better than anyone else. Barbecue music, no doubt. And I don't mean that in a bad way.

6: Policeman Skank - Audioweb: Banged to rights! Reminds me of late nineties London, very messy.

7: I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness: I love the idea of The Darkness - the spandex, the guitars, being Queen's little sister in - ironically - a totally un-ironic way. The thing is, this is the only track of theirs I find acceptable. It's a cracker, though, isn't it?

8: Thick 'n' Thin - Black Crowes: Somewhere between Scooby Doo and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is white boy rock 'n' roll in the Jerry Lewis school (if he'd played guitar, that is). Now, hold still, bwoy...

9: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised - Gil Scott Heron: Seventies Harlem Black Voice personified. Not an obvious guitar track, but gets in on the bassline. You can almost smell it....

10: One in a Million - Guns 'n' Roses: As a counterpoint to the radical seventies Black Power, Axl Rose goes off on one. Only in America.... *sigh*

11: Radar Love - Golden earring: "Hey, Rudy! Grab dat Flying-Vee and let'sh play a little... Rock 'n' Roll!!!" Dutch rockers Golden Earring demonstrate that getting a translator in doesn't always work. "We've got a thing and it's called Radar Love...!". Oh, really...?

12: I Ain't Sofisticated - Ruts: ....umm...

13: The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones: If you ever felt you needed a reason to get up in the morning, the first line of the chorus is it - "I-I-I-I-I!!!! NEVER HAD TO KNOCK ON WOOD...!!!!!..."

14: God's Cop - Happy Mondays: Never really liked these at the time, but was forced into an abrupt about face after someone played me "Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches". Unbelievable when you hear the production that they really were just a bunch of crack heads of the estates, and not a manufactured act. Definitely on one, matey!

15: Daughter - Pearl Jam: Grunge survivors, still head and shoulders above most of the toss that came out of Seattle

16: Rebel Rebel - David Bowie: I can't be arsed doing this any more

17: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix: turn on, skin up, turn over.... no, hang on... turn up, switch off.. oh fuck it...

Invites sent and CD received!

I have sent out invites for people to be able to make postings on this Music Club Blog.

So i have finally got bored of waiting for my CD from captain Beefy O'Keefy and have decided to "go it alone" and release "The Flat CD" via Bittorrent to kick things off. Seeing as apathy seems to rule on this project at the moment the time and effort put into making CDs did'nt seem worth it. The track will burn to CD though.

This was a little project that i actually started back in November 2002! I emailled out a list of tracks that would represent the time at the YMCA Flats at CMK and asked for suggestions. I actually lived there in 1995/96 but the time period i am referring to was back in the late 80s/ early nineties.

Here is a link to the torrent file (zipped): Click here
If you don't know what to do with this - then read here.

Here is the track listing:

A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray (Original Mix)

the klf - what time is love?

Move Any Mountain - The Shamen

Green Onions - Booker T & The MGs

Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants

Step on - Happy Mondays

Little Fluffy Clouds - The ORB

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary

E.S.T. (Trip To The Moon) - Alien Sex Fiend

3AM Eternal - KLF

Deelite - Groove Is In The Heart

cubik (Pan American Excursion) - 808 State

It's Yer Money - The Wonder Stuff

The Sun Rising - Beloved

All the tracks are mixed into 1 MP3 file using a program called MixMeister. Some of the tracks mix well together... but how the hell do you mix She Sells Sanctuary into EST cleanly? I don't know.

As per the rules of Music Club, here is my mini review on the choice of tracks:

1. Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald
Surely the most important dance track for me. The best memory of this i have was hearing it blaring out from a tent at Glastonbury whilst i was.. er.. off it a bit. It never sounded so good! And as Sharon used to say - it sounded so fast back then too! Truly a ground breaking dance track and is still definitely one of my top 10 tunes of all time.

2. What Time Is Love - The KLF
"Springs, strings, new technology the K the L the F and the 'ology" "Mu Mu! Mu Mu!" Need i say any more? Visuals of Rick holding his briefcase up stating "i'm a computer programmer" whilst at Jons in Harrow flow back to me every time i hear this track. Yet another influential dance act from the time and they were also very nonchalant about the whole thing i think - which was cool.

3. Move Any Mountain - The Shamen
"Move any moun-taeeeeeen". Certainly one of the best tracks before they went a bit too heavy with Mr C and "Eberneezer Goode". The Shamen wrote pretty clean sounding techno dance stuff with lyrics that did not impose too much on the tracks therefore not turning them into total pop records. I can still remember most of the lyrics from them too!

4. Green Onions - Booker T and the MGs
Now. Apparently - and i cannot confirm this as i was not there - this track was played whilst people danced round Sharon and Gee's coffee table in the flat. I think it was probably slightly before "my time" at the flat but i thought i would include it anyway.

5. Birdhouse in Your Soul - They Might Be Giants
This was also mainly a fav track for the girls but it is still good all the same. I can't exclude it for just that reason!

6. Step on - Happy Mondays
I remember buying this on 12" from Our Price and walking back to the flat to play it. Still sounds good today and is very representative of the time period. Shame Shaun Ryder turned into a fatty bloater (eh Mat?).

7. Little Fluffy Clouds - The ORB
Still my favorite ORB track and accompanied me on many an astral journey. It does sound a little dated now and the vocal hook is repeated far too often but it is a classic.

8. The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
When i was still at Stantonbury 6th form and Tim went to Bletchley College (and met Rick, Mat et al) he leant me a tape of the Cult (Wult?) and i took it back to the 6th form common room which at that time was in a room above a day creche. We had a large bass speaker in the corner and i put the track on expecting everyone to love it. But they were into The Doors and The Cure at the time - so it did'nt go down too well. Needless to say i crept off with my skateboard never to play it there again!

9. E.S.T. (Trip To The Moon) - Alien Sex Fiend
I was not sure if i should have this track on the CD really as it is sooo bloody long! It reminds me of Mat and always puts pictures of goths in my head for some reason. I bet Alien Sex Fiend were nice smartly dressed people really. Slow plodding guitar tainted depress techno stuff i suppose. Good though.

10. 3AM Eternal - KLF
"Eternal-o-a-ohhhhh". Another classic by the KLF and a nice inclusion on the CD. I do tend to get the 2 tracks on here confused and can't remember quite which rap is from which. Shame the rapper got killed though - or he would be able to tell me.

11. Deelite - Groove Is In The Heart
Another seminal track of the flat era. Complete with funky music, odd sound effects and spangly dance costumes. Sharon, Gee, Mel and Taj at their £1.99 2 Litre Sparkling Lambrusco Bianco best. Anyone for powdered milk?

12. Cubik (Pan American Excursion) - 808 State
Whilst i was at Bletchley College i went on a week long trip to visit Dominic in Manchester to do some artwork and get cultured. What really happened was that we spent several days running around Mosside pissed and stoned shouting "Haway the lads" at the tops of our voices, eating Vege Samosas from a takeaway called the Cuckoo Chef and listening to this track. I think i also brought it back to the flat crew and we all learned to rejoice in the church of 808 state.

13. It's Yer Money - The Wonder Stuff
"It's yer Terbut i'm after baby!". Another classy track from the flat era which reminds me of Tim and Rick alot. This would be playing in Tims car as we cruised from woughton to wolverton, from CMK to the YMCA.

14. The Sun Rising - Beloved
Nice floaty dancy stuff. The Beloved at their best. I never forget how many million remixes were made of this track - but i have some in my loft on vinal along with other Beloved tracks too. I can remember playing this track with the doors open in Sharon and Gee's flat and the evening sunlight streaming in. Probably whilst Rick was pissing off the balcony though...

And there concludes my mini review of the tracks on the CD. I have left off some important artists probably such as Cud, Stone Roses, The Waterboys, Sinead O'connor and anything from the Dirty Dancing original soundtrack. As i was writing them i am also not 100% sure that all the tracks are from that time period. Maybe you will point out my mistakes - who knows.

Comments welcome.
